Asbury’s Student Congress voted a new student body president into office on Thursday, Aug. 23.
Ben Campbell will replace Elijah Lutz who resigned in June. “I will not comment on the reason for my resignation out of respect. I only ask for understanding and respect, and I wish the absolute best for President Campbell and Executive Cabinet,” Lutz said.
Over the summer, Asbury’s Executive Cabinet began the process of filling the vacancy by submitting the names of possible nominees it believed would best fill Lutz’s position. Campbell’s nomination was based on involvement in the cabinet, experience and interest. As a result, Campbell, Lutz’s opponent in last semester’s election, became the cabinet’s nominee for the vacancy.
After Campbell had been chosen by the cabinet, he was presented to the Asbury Student Congress for voting. The floor was open for those with any questions and concerns. One member of the cabinet motioned to table the matter to have more time to get to know Campbell. The motion was seconded, which allowed discussion. At that point, other members argued that Campbell’s platform was already expressed when he ran last semester and tabling the matter would only prolong the process of finding a new president. Eventually, the members voted not to table the issue and elected Campbell.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to work with such amazing people that have such great hearts for campus,” said Campbell. “I’m encouraged by the support I have gotten over the past few days and cannot wait to see how the Lord will work on campus this academic year.”
