For 8 years, Asbury’s Faith & Culture chapel series has sought to explore today’s social issues in the context of the Christian faith. Previous topics include public policy, medicine, leadership with integrity and violence.
This year’s series, “Faith in a Snapchat Culture,” will explore how technology and social media affect our faith, spiritual growth and focus. The series will kick off Oct. 17.
“As Christians who give high value to relationships, we have to give critical thought to the impact of social media on our daily routines,” said Greg Haseloff, associate dean of campus ministries. “Each one of us who engages in social media knows how easy it is to be consumed.”
Doreen Dodgen-Magee will be this year’s guest speaker. Dodgen-Magee holds a doctorate in psychology and was inspired to research social media’s impact on relationships after seeing how it affected her clients. She regularly speaks to college students.
According to Sarah Baldwin, vice president of student development and dean of students, Monday’s chapel will focus on “Doing Life and Faith in the Digital Age.” The theme of Wednesday’s chapel will be the “Power of Pause.” There will also be a talkback session from 12 to 1 p.m. on Monday.
“The series of chapels will engage how social media and media immersion shapes us,” Baldwin said. She said her hope is that the series will open the minds and hearts of students to listen in their virtual lives.
