Asbury University’s Kresge dormitory hosts “Kresge Rooftop,” the first major campus gathering to be held on the dorm’s best feature: the roof. The event begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 and is designed to be a celebration of the end of the first week of classes. It lasts until Asbury’s Worship Night, WHAM (Worship Him At Midnight), begins at 10:30 p.m. in the Student Center.
An original idea inspired by the building’s residence assistants (RAs), Kresge Rooftop will have cornhole, karaoke and delicious free food.
“We have this amazing space that’s pretty much unused except to tan,” said Stephanie Echeverry, RA of Kresge’s 2nd East hall. “[The RAs] thought, ‘How cool would it be to have a karaoke, line dancing and grilling hangout?’”
Kim Levengood, the dormitory resident director, agreed. “We want to emphasize and promote and embrace the best features of Kresge,” Levengood said. One of these features just happens to be recently-installed rooftop wifi.
In addition to the party on the roof, event-goers will have the opportunity to tour the newly renovated lobby upon entrance into the dorm. According to Levengood, renovations had been talked about for a while, but exact dates were still unofficial last year. There was no delay in the project once summer hit, however, as carpet was pulled the Monday right after graduation.
Kresge Rooftop is kicking off a new year not only for campus but for the dormitory as a whole. According to Levengood, the event is specifically designed for students on campus, whereas another well-loved Kresge event, Kresge Kandyland, will be focused more for the community of Wilmore. Levengood also wants to increase the number of all-campus activities and fully embrace the maze-like qualities of Kresge by hosting a laser tag event for all of campus.
Levengood and the RAs of Kresge have high hopes for this Saturday. The RAs are hoping residents feel increased comradery through a unique hall event that spotlights both the dorm’s new features as well as the hidden gems. The women are solely responsible for planning, promoting and running the rooftop party. “We’re here to mingle around and be really good hosts,” said Echeverry.
In the event of rain, the event will be rescheduled via Kresge’s social media. Find them on Facebook at Kresge Hall and kresge_hall on Instagram for more updates.
