Men’s lacrosse program discontinued

Collegian Staff Report

In the midst of its fifth season, the men’s lacrosse program as been discontinued, effective immediately. The news broke March 13 in a release on Asbury’s athletic site.

According to the release, Asbury’s administration came to the decision “after conducting a thorough review and evaluation of the program, including: the ability to field a competitive team, recruiting, scheduling, coaching, budget, conference membership and alignment with the mission of the institution.”

The team started the 2019 season 0-3, having lost every game by a double-digit margin. The Eagles have only experienced one winning season, which was in 2014-15 — the first year of the team’s existence.

Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Mark Whitworth wants to retain these athletes at Asbury: “Asbury is committed to honoring the scholarships of all current team members through their scheduled graduation. The Athletic Department and Student Development staff stand ready to assist our students through this transition.”

This decision drops the number of Asbury’s intercollegiate athletic programs to 17.

The Asbury Collegian will update this story as more details emerge.

  1. What a joke! You have to continue to build a program. It takes years to build a successful program. This is a “We are not winning, so…” decision and that is not fair to the current team or even future players that could have made this team great. Very poor decision by the Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, Mark Whitworth! Has no idea how to run or support his programs at Asbury.

    Grow the Game!

  2. Very disappointing. Such a bad decision. We need to grow the game not cut programs that help bring students to your school. So stupid!

  3. My understanding is that this decision may have been less about the team’s win/loss record and more about some persistent “alignment with the mission of the institution” issues. If true, this would explain the axing of the team mid season.

  4. Indeed disappointing and unfair. I admittedly do not know the full background as I am a recent Asbury student but I can say success does take a tremendous amount of resources and time. My alma master’s lacrosse program started as a club team, advanced to Div 1 and even qualified for rhe NCAA tournament … all within fifteen years. The leaps Transylvania lacrosse has made in the last several years is incredible. It just takes time and real commitment. But what doesn’t? My sincere hopes are that men’s lacrosse at Asbury does not disappear and continues as a club or intramural entity for the time being while assessing its return to an NCAA level. To have the sport disappear for good would be an even larger tragedy than what has already occurred. Thanks for your time.
