The election: What comes next?

On Saturday, Nov. 7, the Associated Press declared former vice president Joe Biden the winner of the United States presidential election. But what comes next?

Some people have questioned the accuracy of the results. President Donald Trump plans to take the election to the Supreme Court due to his belief that some votes were fraudulent.

“Joe Biden has not been certified as the winner of any states, let alone any of the highly contested states headed for mandatory recounts, or states where our campaign has valid and legitimate legal challenges that could determine the ultimate victor,” Trump claimed, according to CNBC.

The idea of voter fraud has not been backed up by factual evidence fromTrump.

“Trump has produced no evidence of systemic problems in voting or counting,” the Associated Press Fact Check reported. “In fact, the ballot-counting process across the country has been running smoothly for the most part, even with the U.S. in the throes of the coronavirus pandemic.”

Even so, CNBC reported that president of Citizens United, David Bossie, was originally chosen to handle the challenge of election results. Bossie is now unable to take charge and has been “sidelined” due to contracting COVID-19.

“David Bossie, who just days ago was tapped to handle President Donald Trump’s effort to challenge the results of the presidential election, has tested positive for the coronavirus, NBC News reported Monday,” CNBC said.

The inauguration of the president-elect will be Jan. 20, 2021, but the race is still not over, according to Trump.

“The simple fact is this election is far from over,” Trump said in a statement Saturday, USA Today reported.

According to The New York Times, Republican Senator Roy Blunt, who chairs the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, was vague about who will be sworn in on Inauguration Day.

“This is a great time for us to show how a true democracy works,” Blunt said, according to The New York Times. “I’m confident we are going to see that. I expect to see both Vice President Biden and President Trump on the stage on Inauguration Day, and that will be a powerful message, no matter which one of them is sworn in.”
