With the shadow of COVID-19 and its variants still looming, getting a flu shot this year is more crucial than ever. Though this will not prevent COVID-19, it is a necessary measure that will reduce the burden of flu-related illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths on the health care system. As a result, this will also conserve scarce medical resources for the care of people struck with COVID 19.
ARC will be hosting a FLU vaccination drive via their NEW mobile clinic. This initiative will cater to Asbury University employees as well as their families who are covered under the university’s health insurance plan.
Flu vaccines will be available Thursday, Sept. 23 from noon to 4 p.m. at the ARC Wellness on Wheels Mobile Clinic in the parking lot between Johnson Residence Hall and Kinlaw Library. Registration and scheduling are currently open and can be accessed through an email invitation c/o Wellness on Wheels. Completion of paperwork will greatly reduce wait times on the day of the event. Forms then must be completed and submitted online before the preferred schedule. A $10 copayment will be collected on the day of the vaccination (cash or card only).
Common reactions to immunizations include redness and/or tenderness at the injection site and mild systemic side effects, which can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications. Concerns about taking the vaccine, based on medical conditions or allergies, should be discussed with a healthcare provider upon scheduling. Please bring any questions or concerns to the ARC staff’s attention on that day prior to vaccine administration. Also, be prepared with the medical insurance information ready to enter during the registration process.
In terms of preparation for the actual day itself, here are some reminders. An email notification will be received two days before the appointment. Be sure to bring the following: a driver’s license or other photo identification card, medical insurance card, and copay. Please wear a loose-fitting shirt so the shoulder area is easily accessible for the staff administering the vaccine.
