If you have stepped foot onto Asbury’s campus in the past four years, chances are, you know Sam Diaz. He is a hardworking, fun-loving guy who is ready at a moment’s notice to offer his little nuggets of wisdom and compassion.
Growing up, Diaz’s parents instilled in him the importance of family. He said that “the most important thing in life, second only to God, was family.” Since the age of 11, he has worked to help support his family. He said that “whether it was doing landscape work, or photography, delivery service, pool monitoring, or working as a janitor, I was always working so that I could succeed and take care of my parents.” To this day, Diaz strives to make his family proud. “I’m doing this because I want to make my parents and grandparents proud,” Diaz said, “But I’m also doing this because I want to be an example for my siblings, and most importantly, my nieces.”
Throughout his time at Asbury, Diaz’s compassion has driven him to help others. He said, “The most important thing to me is that I impact people’s lives and help them view life from a different perspective.” Diaz explained that his upbringing and his past have paved the way for this passion. “I want to be the light that I didn’t have for other people, and being able to do that means more to me than anything else.”
Diaz is a Senior Communications major with an emphasis in Public Relations. Over the past four years, he has found a way to use what he has learned to serve the community, primarily by being a sponsor for the Ignited Class. Diaz said that he wanted to be a class sponsor because “I want to be that real and honest person that incoming students can come talk to so that they don’t feel so alone.”
Diaz is passionate about inspiring others to be the best that they can be every day. He said, “No matter how much life throws at you, at the end of the day, always choose joy. God is faithful through it all; even in the days that we don’t see it, He still has a plan for us. Our story is still being told and every moment is a blessing and a lesson.”
