Men’s golf team wins NCCAA qualifiers

The Asbury men’s golf team won their NCCAA regional qualifying tournament with an impressive score of two over as a team.  This win qualifies them for the NCCAA Championship in Florida.

“I’m very excited for the boys,” Coach Scott Ferguson said. “It’s one of those moments in our program where I feel like it’s the changing of the tide that that not only are our seniors able to celebrate, but we also see some really good things from our younger players. So I’m excited about the future, and I’m excited for this opportunity for them.”

The men competed last Monday, Sept. 20 and Tuesday, Sept. 21. They shot six over in the first round, but they shot four-under on the second day.

“On the first day, they had to deal with some environmental things,” said Ferguson. “There was some rain, a lot of wind, and just things outside their control. But I feel like the second day we started, and there’s a little bit of weather, but everything stayed away, and they were able to attack the golf course.”

Three of the men placed in the top three of the tournament. Junior Juan Valdivieso tied for 5th overall, senior Nathan Stine tied for 3rd, and freshman Garrett Sturges was the medalist and first in the field of 23.

This win marks the first for the men’s team in a while and one of their most impressive scores on record.

“For three of our seniors to be able to play in a national tournament after winning the first tournament that they have one in their tenure here in Asbury, it’s pretty special,” Ferguson said.

The men are heading to Florida to compete from October 18th to the 21st in the NCCAA Championship.
