With “autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place,” in the words of Taylor Swift, there is nowhere better to spend your autumn than our beloved Asbury University. Colorful trees, a light fog dusting campus and crisp morning air, painting pumpkins in dimly lit rooms and the occasional campfire. This is the autumn that every poet and author dreams up, but few ever get to experience.
Now that the weather has begun to turn, so have the leaves. Junior Lydia Ripley said, “My absolute favorite thing about Asbury in the fall is the Wilmore trees that change to the color yellow.”
Similarly, Courageous class president Ian Wang said, “I love the fiery leaves of the trees, the spicy seasonal HICCUP drinks, and the combined Thanksgiving and Christmas parties.”
Another staple of The Asbury Autumn is festive hall events. Freshmen Chance Middleton and Taylor Boss said that the Trebuchet Launch hosted by N3RD Hall was their favorite autumn event. “Watching the boys of N3RD Hall launch pumpkins into a field and fail was funny,” Middleton said. “Some people almost got hurt, and if they had, that would have really spruced things up.”
Over on Third Crawford is a similar sentiment. “Our RA, Lydia Ripley, made us homemade mac-and-cheese,” freshman Taryn Green said. “We watched Hocus Pocus and Pitch Perfect. It was a great opportunity to get to know the people on Cove better while enjoying festivities.”
Finally, is it even autumn without seasonal drinks from the HICCUP?
“My favorite thing about fall is sitting in the library looking out the window, drinking coffee, and doing work because the changing leaves are beautiful,” said freshman Kaity McCracken.
Fall drinks are a great way to achieve that autumn-academia aesthetic that we all strive for. Freshman Andrew Cruse said, “Since coming to Asbury, I’ve learned about the Apple Cider Chai at the hiccup that my friends and I affectionately call ‘Apple Chaider.’ It’s one of my favorite drinks at the HICCUP; it really gets you in the mood for fall.”
As classes begin to pick up and life becomes more hectic, the slow and simple moments like the beauty of changing leaves and “apple chaiders” bring little moments of joy and peace into life.
