The Asbury women’s soccer team has officially concluded their 2021 season following two losses at the NCCAA national tournament in Kissimmee, Florida. They finished their season with a record of 6-11-1.
“We lost both of our games in the first round of championship play, but we’re keeping our heads high knowing that we made it to the national tournament and put up a good fight against two top-level teams,” said junior Lisa Nessleroade. She added that competing as a Division III school for the first time was difficult. “We played several top 25 teams, and most of our games were away, so we did a lot of traveling,” she said.
Despite the challenges, the team found things they enjoyed about the season, and the travel gave them more time with one another. Senior Janelle Suvimolstean is now officially done with her soccer career, but looking back, she adored the time she spent with her teammates.
“With my soccer career coming to an end, I found myself thinking more about the women I would not be seeing every day over no longer playing the sport I have loved and competed in since I was 5,” said Suvimolstean. “I have never been as connected with a soccer team before. It is full of so many different personalities, but the love, care, loyalty, and encouragement on this team is what makes me want to work hard and smile on the days I am drained.”
Playing alongside them for so long, Suvimolstean acknowledged their hard work,
persistence and encouragement.
“Our team never stops working, fighting, and keeping the opponents on their toes,” she said. “Whether we are winning or not, we have a strong spirit. That spirit has led us to victories and helped get us to the national championship in Florida.”
Having a team gave Suvimolstean the connection she needed due to her family being over nine hours away. In her words, the woman “celebrated big milestones” in her life, offered her support, and listened to her passions.
“I am very thankful for the time I have had to play at Asbury,” Suvimolstean said, “and I am looking forward to watching how the team does in the years to come.”
