A night full of back-to-back plays, sweet treats, and the arts is coming to you here at Asbury this Thursday and Friday at 9 P.M. Students have been working through the last two semesters to put on this show.
Junior Charity Johnson has been working on her play Black Man Down, as both the writer and director. She is one of the cast members.
“It has been a difficult journey, but the Lord has been faithful and provided me with the people I need to bring this vision to life,” she said. “I am not the one who is usually directing but acting on stage or behind the scenes, this territory is new for me.”
While Johnson is maintaining all these roles in her play, she is reminded that her strength comes from God. She trusts in Him whole-heartedly to pursue this final piece. This is a moment she has been waiting for almost a year now after being inspired by a movie called, The Hate U Give.
“Originally, I had an idea for Black History Month 2021 that was inspired by a scene from the book and movie ‘The Hate U Give,’ but it was too late to plan the event, so I decided to write a play about it instead,” she said. “I can’t always see how it will turn out, but God has given me the hope and assurance to keep moving forward no matter how hard it gets.”
Johnson is excited about this upcoming event and can’t wait to share what she has created with the audience. She has encouraged people to come out and bring friends because it’s a show you won’t want to miss.
