Did you know that Earth Day has been considered a national holiday since 1970, making this 52 years of celebration? Fun fact; it started as a movement to bring awareness to the importance of cleanliness on the Earth. Fueled by the frustration of air pollution, people motivated others to campaign. Today, we still witness pollution of the earth daily, but the question is, what can we do about it? Here are some things you can do to celebrate and save the planet today.
Consider taking a hike with some friends through one of the many trails located in or around Wilmore. Perhaps bring along a trash bag and pick up anything you see on the ground that threatens the wildlife. It might not seem like much, but it does make a difference.
Second, go shopping and invest in reusable bottles to eliminate the number of plastic bottles thrown away. When plastic isn’t disposed of through recycling methods, it often makes its way to the sea, harming oceanic life. So go to your local Walmart (or shop locally downtown) and purchase a reusable bottle to push for change on the Earth.
Third, make a post featuring some of the issues taking place on our planet. Be an advocate for change by writing an article about things that need help to better the cleanliness of the Earth. Your words could motivate the next person to seek after bringing some of these problems to the light. Once one person says something, this will lead to a chain of people sharing and reposting for change.
Lastly, check out some of your local environmental organizations and find ways to volunteer. Places like this are always looking for people willing to help out, so spend your Earth Day participating in cleaning up our planet, with other people contributing to the same thing.
Considering it falls on a Friday this year, let’s make it an Earth weekend. Fill up your weekend spending time doing any of the activities listed above.
