Former state trooper and coroner convicted of weapons theft

A former Kentucky state trooper has been  convicted in federal court of conspiring to misappropriate weapons from state police. The verdict was announced Aug. 31.

According to evidence presented at trial, former Georgetown State Police lieutenant colonel Michael Crawford, 58, conspired with former Kentucky coroner John Goble, 68, and state police armorer Mitch Harris to misappropriate 21 guns from the state police’s possession. According to the Department of Justice’s online records, these included 19 shotguns and two M1A rifles.

Crawford will receive up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000, according to the Department of Justice. His sentencing will be held on Dec. 13.

Goble previously also pled guilty to a related misappropriation conspiracy on May 11, this one involving 187 cases of ammunition owned by Frankfort police, with a combined value of $40,000. According to Goble’s plea agreement, Goble made an agreement with Crawford to store the ammunition in the basement of his office. This agreement started in 2014 and continued until 2018.

Crawford and Goble were both indicted in Mar. 2021.

As of Sept. 11, no information on Mitch Harris’ arrest or trial status is available on the Office of the United States Attorneys’ database.
