Professor Highlight: Professor Robyn Florian

Professor Robyn Florian has been working to earn her Doctorate at the Asbury Seminary since starting her teaching career at Asbury University in the spring of 2020. Before Asbury, Florian spent 25 years working in nonprofit communications.

“Asbury is such a sweet space in a wild world,” Florian said. “There are beautiful people, the place and purpose in the Kingdom.”

Florian teaches Cultural Influence of Mass Media classes at the university and has thoroughly enjoyed her time here. She says she enjoys engaging students in discussions about cultural narratives that have different worldviews in comparison to a biblical narrative.

Additionally, Florian said she wants to help her students to understand that it’s okay to get help in the midst of pain and hardships.

“I experienced deep pain from a significant loss, and I was too embarrassed to tell people, and, more importantly, too embarrassed to get help in processing the pain,” Florian said.

Being a  small, Christian based community provides Asbury students and Alumni hope, courage, and strength for the rough days we face. The mission here at Asbury is to not only equip students for academic excellence, but also through spiritual vitality.

“I don’t want others to miss the opportunities for support and healing surrounding them here at AU,” Florian said.

Florian also struggled spiritually for years before she got help. She said she’s here to help students know that there is an army of staff at Asbury who are  available to meet the needs of all students before it’s too late.

“These years in school are a sweet space in time to “restory destoried stories,” naming our strengths and shadows and reframing our stories of pain and shame,” Florian said.

Florian is a proud mother to a 2013 N3RD Alum and enjoys talking to students about hope brained research. She wants children to know that there is hope awaiting them at the end of a dark tunnel.

“I believe God loves to heal, reclaiming and repurposing all of the beauty and brokenness in our lives in the context of His Story of faith, hope and love,” Florian said.
