The Green Bay Packers were not expected to win last Sunday, even while hosting the Dallas Cowboys at historic Lambeau Field. They were not expected to pull out a victory in the fourth quarter, when they trailed by 14 points to a Cowboys team drooling over wide receiver CeeDee Lamb having a breakout game.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers came alive while connecting with rookie wide receiver Christian Watson to lead Green Bay to 17 unanswered points and a 31-28 overtime upset, snapping the Packers’ five-game losing streak.
The Packers entered Sunday’s game with a five-game losing streak. Green Bay hadn’t lost six in a row since losing seven consecutive games in 1988 and again in 1990.
Last year, the Packers were notorious for going for it on fourth down. In a clear indication of how much this team has changed, head coach Matt LaFleur declined to go for fourth-and-shorts across midfield twice. The Packers took a delay-of-game penalty to pin the Cowboys inside their 20-yard line instead.
Dallas was up 28-14 headed into the fourth quarter before Rodgers and Watson exploded.
Dallas Quarterback Dak Prescott had three touchdown passes and 265 passing yards. Both of Prescott’s interceptions came in the first half and led to Packers touchdowns on the following drives.
LaFleur’s team is still 4-6, but that’s still right in the race in the top-heavy NFC. Beating the Cowboys on Sunday should be a confidence-building victory for a team that needed the jolt, and the emergence of Watson could be a huge factor for the offense weapon unit headed later into the season.
