As the school year comes to a close, Asbury begins the transition to a new Executive Cabinet (EC). The new student body president will be junior Emma Reid.
Reid was originally born in China, but was adopted at a young age. She grew up with her family in northern Kentucky about an hour and a half from Asbury’s campus.
Looking back at her Asbury experience thus far, Reid says that has been fulfilling. “Stepping into my identity as I’ve come to college, learning who I am as an individual, and seeing my faith for myself is really exciting.”
Reid is an accounting major and will be graduating from Asbury a year early. In her free time, she participates in intramural, intercultural life and is a student worker. She feels pretty representative of the student body. As student body president, she desires to become even more involved and “fulfill that role even more.”
“I’ve always loved being a leader, whether that was in a formal sense or not,” she said.
However, she said she also believes in continuing to make Asbury a welcoming place. “It’s really important to me to encourage people to be seen and at home on this campus,” Reid said. Allowing current and new students to “have a good college experience and feel known” is the ultimate goal.
To make this possible, she said she has a unique approach when coming into office. She wants to “feel what the need is before coming in with a list of things to do.”
Yet, more directly, Reid desires greater comfort and communication with the administration. She said she wants to “increase transparency,” so students know where to go during conflict.
As well, Reid has been described as a “go-getter” who loves saying “yes” to people. But she has learned balance. She desires other students to learn the same. “Yes, we can do all of these fun things, but we must remain good students and good friends,” she said.
In the midst of preparation, Reid is reminded that no matter her planning, it’s going to happen in God’s timing. She truly believes that we are all “image bearers.” Reid wants to reflect on that as she takes on this new role as SBP.
She said, “Revival helped me learn that everything that we do is worship. All of our time is not ours, it’s the Lord’s. Everything we do, we do for Him.”
