The Silent Disco was introduced by Asbury’s Student Activities Cabinet (SAC) last fall semester. The event was a great success and has continued to be included as an anticipated event each semester.
“We did it twice last year,” said Sam Johnson, SAC’s Team Lead. “It was a big turnout, and it was fun to plan. We are hoping to keep throwing it as long as people want to attend.”
This Silent Disco is different from just the average school dance. What makes the disco “silent” is the use of headphones for each student instead of speakers for the music. At previous discos, students were given a special set of light-up headphones that included three different music stations.
From a 2000’s pop station to 80’s classics, students have danced the evening away to their preferred tune. The color of the headphones corresponded to the station the listener was on. Those without headphones could hear students all singing different songs and dancing to completely different genres.
“It’s my favorite event,” Johnson said. “You can control what you’re listening to. Anyone can participate and come together.”
The Silent Disco is a place where all Asbury students can come to relax, enjoy refreshments and have fun, no dancing skills required. It is also a place to connect with friends and meet new people.
“Anyone is welcome,” Johnson encouraged. “It’s free admission. The more people who are there, the more fun it will be. There is no pressure and no judgment. Everyone wants everyone to be there.”
The disco is usually centered around a theme, and decorations and food are chosen accordingly to best fit the experience. Last semester, students enjoyed a “Space Cowboy” themed dance. The theme of this semester’s disco is the 80’s.
This fun evening of music, dancing, lights and laughter is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7 between 8 and 11 p.m. in the Shaw Collaborative Learning Center (CLC).
