There are many ways to get connected with intercultural life at Asbury, even without being an international student. Student Intercultural Programs (SIP) is hosting its first event next week.
The event is an International Cartoons Night, featuring films from various cultures. This event is a great introduction to SIP for students who have never attended its events or those who do not know about it. This evening event is planned to be laid back, promoting a comfortable space for students to connect with each other and experience different cultures. Students will get to enjoy breakfast cereals and are also encouraged to wear their pajamas.
SIP is a branch of the Asbury Student Cabinet (ASC) working alongside the Intercultural Offices. This program seeks to offer opportunities for non-international students to participate in events focusing on different cultures.
“SIP is here to promote cultural competency amongst the student body. That is the goal when we partner with the Intercultural Office,” said SIP Vice President Kourtney Kawata.
Participating in SIP events is a great way for students to get connected with others outside of their culture.
“As a community living under the image of God, we have a responsibility to learn about other cultures and not get stuck within our own bubbles. Students need to branch out and experience a culture outside of their own,” said Kawata.
You do not have to be an intercultural student to participate in any SIP events. While the Intercultural Office has alliances and offers opportunities just for intercultural students, SIP is designed to reach students who do not fall into that category.
“Our events are for all students. We are the bridge between the international and non-international students,” said Kawata.
International Cartoons Night will be Tuesday, Oct. 1 in the CLC auditorium from 7-9 p.m. For more information on upcoming SIP events contact Asbury Student Congress: (Student.Congress@asbury.edu).
