Athlete of the week spotlight: Ethan Bonow

Asbury swimmer Ethan Bonow in one of our Athletes of the Week.

Bonow, a freshman, said he’s been swimming for nearly a decade, with his competitive edge in the sport being a more recent development. “I knew I wanted to do it competitively two and a half years ago,” Bonow said.

When asked about what made Asbury the particular best suitor for that goal, Bonow’s answer was simple and immediate, “Oh, that’s easy. Jesus, really. He just highlighted it to me.”

Being an Eagle was never in doubt for Bonow, and now in his first year, he’s already notched an Athlete of the Week honor on his belt.

When asked what the achievement means to him specifically, Bonow was candid, “I didn’t know what it was… but it’s cool.”

“I don’t feel like I deserve it,” he said with a smile. This positivity was a glowing constant throughout the entirety of our conversation.

Bonow, in looking forward to his first season of competition, emphasized being a part of a larger cooperative whole. When asked what he’s most excited about this year, he said, “Just being with the team and helping them succeed.”

Bonow and the men’s swimming team will look to improve on their 1-2 record in a bout against University of the Cumberlands on Nov. 2. Last year the unit finished with a 1-6 record, but with the addition of freshman athletes like Bonow and a good chunk of play ahead, there’s a great chance the men’s swimming team will see their desired improvement going forward.

Either way, Bonow has made a real splash on the team both in the water and beyond it. His chipper attitude and dedicated mindset has cemented him as a valued competitor and valued friend in equal parts.
