While the flu may seem like a disease of one’s childhood past, it still continues to be an issue all across the country and even in our own backyard. According to the Asbury Health Clinic, Asbury has had 45 diagnosed cases of the flu on campus this year, with many more likely trying to fight it on their own. Just by walking through the school grounds, you can’t seem to go five steps without hearing someone coughing.
Flu season takes up roughly eight months out of the year, from September to April.
According to the CDC, this year’s flu season has been the most intense since 2009-2010, when swine flu hit the nation. While this could be mistaken for other illnesses, Covid cases have been declining since the fall and RSV is also fading nationally.
There are also a variety of different symptoms that a person can experience. The Asbury Health Clinic says, “The most common that we are seeing is fever, cough, body aches, headaches, weakness/fatigue, sore throat, runny nose and some have nausea and vomiting. On average these symptoms can last 3-5 days and isolation is recommended to stop the spread.”
While most college students might not feel that they need flu shots, it is still important that they get one. By getting a flu vaccine, students can prevent hospitalization or worse effects. The Asbury Health Clinic says, “We hosted a Flu vaccine here on campus in October with Medsave Pharmacy. 35 students, faculty and staff participated with options to receive both the Flu and updated COVID vaccines.” A student cannot get an illness excuse note for illness without first going to the clinic.
Finding a location that provides flu vaccines can feel overwhelming. The best place to get a flu shot is at your local doctor. However if that is not an option, there are also options here in Wilmore, Lexington, and Nicholasville, such as Medsave Pharmacy. Their hours are from 9 am to 6 pm and their phone number is (859) 858-2453. Many larger chains, such as Walgreens, CVS, Kroger, and Walmart, also offer free flu shots. The vaccines are available until April.
