Brennan Davis student recital

On the night of Monday, February 24, Jameson Recital Hall will be filled with the music of Brennan Davis as he plays the euphonium for his senior recital.

From 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., Davis will be playing four solos, including “The Green Hill” by Bert Appermont, “Song for Ina” and “Harlequinby Philip Sparke and, finally, the hymn “Jesus Paid It All.” These songs create a diverse atmosphere for Davis’ recital, as they range from Celtic pieces to a familiar hymn, showcasing the depth and skill that Davis portrays through intense stylistic songs that will leave the audience wanting more.

Davis commented on his inspiration to include a hymn in his recital, stating, “I like to mix in different kinds of music into my recital. I always try to play something that’s Christian just because I think that that style of music speaks to me as a musician. You have a reason behind what you’re playing, right? That’s my origin, so I like to include that because it means something to me, rather than just playing notes.” It is clear that Davis not only has talent but also possesses a depth of passion and drive that elevates his music to the next level.

“Each song has its own value and reason. If I had to pick a favorite, I would probably pick ‘Jesus Paid It All’ because I’ve played it before at Wesley Village, and I know the reaction of the audience when I play it. It means something to me, and I think it means something to the audience as well. So that connection is really nice.”

Davis has been playing this unique instrument for 12 years, first starting with the cornet at the age of eight before ultimately transitioning to euphonium. As a music education major, Davis is surrounded by the musical community at Asbury and commented that there is never a shortage of opportunities for those wanting to get involved. Davis is also involved in a barbershop group with other students, and they are planning to make their debut in the upcoming future. He adds, “There is never a lack of anything to do. The professors are really cool, and you have the opportunity to participate in a variety of things, which I think is important for musicians.”

As is apparent through the variety of pieces in his upcoming recital, Davis is engrossed in multiple genres of music, not limiting himself to one specific type for inspiration. “I think there’s something that you could grasp onto, whether it be indie, rock or rap. You can get anything out of anything you want. There are different types of interpretations that you can get. So it’s just a matter of how you think about it.”

All are invited to Jameson Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 24 to hear Davis wow the audience with his four euphonium solos, as a testament to his dedication and time at Asbury, as well as to the art of music overall.
