On the night of February 8, one of Asbury’s most beloved dorms, Glide Crawford (GC), hosted the event Hallywood, which immersed all attendees in the magic of the movies. Each hall of GC worked tirelessly on their themes, using crafting and acting skills that transformed the dorm’s seemingly simple spaces into intricate movie worlds.
Upon entering, attendees were encouraged to start in the depths of Lower Glide, guided through coats and scarves of a wardrobe that led them into the magical world of “Narnia.” Vines and leaves covered the walls to create the perfect atmosphere before entering the White Witch’s castle. Those who walked through this hall truly felt as though they had stepped into “Narnia,” with a set so intricate that Lower Glide won the award for Best Set.
Next, guests were led to a world of magic flowers, princesses and chameleons as they walked through a lantern-lit hallway. The scene transported them into the endearing story of “Tangled.” Guests tried to throw apples into Maximus’ mouth, saw the entrance to the Snuggly Duckling, and danced to the soundtrack that captured the essence of the movie. This hall earned the Best Soundtrack award, and Rapunzel and Flynn waved goodbye from a romantic spot by the river, overlooking a spectacular lantern show.
From a fairytale to the sewers, guests next entered the life of Remy the rat in “Ratatouille,” navigating the Paris kitchen scene beneath a chef’s hat. The walls were decorated with fruits and vegetables, while rats scurried through the hall, dodging a life-sized apple that made attendees feel tiny enough to fit under a hat. Even Anton Ego, the famous food critic, made an appearance under an intricately crafted chandelier that amazed viewers. This hall, so impressive in its detail, won the title of Best Picture—an award no one would contest.
Second Crawford was transformed into “Barbie” Land, with Barbie and Ken dolls covering the walls. Visitors got to live their dream of visiting the Mojo Dojo Casa House, where they were greeted by some of the most “manly men” embracing the strength of the patriarchy. Guests interacted with real-life Barbie and Ken dolls, with the actresses delivering performances so convincing that they won the Best Actresses award.
After all the Barbie dolls enthusiastically bid farewell with a cheerful “Bye, Barbie!” visitors were whisked away through golden streamers and into the world of “Bee Movie.” Attendees were given a golden spoon with pollen to keep safe until the end of their journey. Guests faced bee-sized challenges, dodging tennis balls, navigating a handmade giant shoe and evading a makeshift fly swatter made from rolled-up newspaper. Before leaving, everyone was encouraged to sign a petition for proper wages and better representation for bees. Stay tuned for updates on the bees’ journey toward justice.
From the sky to the sea, visitors were then submerged into an ocean of coral reefs, sharks and greedy seagulls in a “Finding Nemo”-themed hall. “Fish are friends, not food,” was the reminder as they navigated jellyfish hanging from the ceiling, reminiscent of Marlin’s journey to find Nemo. Before exiting, attendees saw Darla shaking a bag containing a fish, making it so realistic that this hall won the Best Costumes award.
After traveling through halls inspired by “The Emperor’s New Groove,” “Pixie Hollow” and “Inside Out,” Forrest Jamison commented, “It was fun seeing people commit to their creative halls and put their own spin on an event like Johnson Christmas. I love movies, so it’s cool seeing people pick their favorite movies and try to immerse us in that environment.”
The Student Activities Cabinet, in collaboration with the women of GC, created the perfect atmosphere for moviegoers and amazed attendees with their dedication and incredible ingenuity. This event will be the one to beat, as every detail was meticulously curated to match each hall’s theme, leaving students speechless and wanting more.
