Individual classes to worship in Breakout Chapel

On Wednesday, Feb. 26, Asbury’s student body will split into individual classes to celebrate God in four separate breakout chapels.

An ongoing tradition at Asbury University, breakout chapels allow students from each of the four classes to hear from and celebrate with their closest peers. Often tailored around the class’ specific name or verse, organizers do their best to create a unifying experience for each class through a unique time together.

“When I was a student at Asbury, I remember [a breakout chapel] in particular that impacted me and formed my belief that breakout chapels are important,” said Rachel VanLaningham, Asbury’s University Chapel Coordinator. “My class name is Vindicated, which is not a word you hear all the time, and having a whole chapel talking about how Jesus has vindicated us and what that means for our identity was super impactful in my life.”

Along with specific themes and messages for each class, these times also highlight student stories from those in each year, creating a needed space for sharing testimonies.

“I loved hearing stories from some of our peers [last breakout chapel],” said Allison Pickerill, Beloved Class President. “I cherish the opportunity we have once a semester to worship together as a class, [and] it is so special to see everyone interacting with their peers and seeking the Lord together.”

On top of the staff involved in making this event happen, class cabinet leaders have also joined in the effort to make these breakout chapels an impactful experience for students of all ages.

“Our class cabinet works tirelessly to ensure that the events we put on facilitate a greater sense of community through worship, interaction or message,” said Renewed Class President Santiago Burgos. “Our hope is that, through class chapel, our freshmen class will strengthen their tether to not just Asbury, but their class full of people who are eager to deepen their connection to Christ.”

Breakout chapels this semester will take place in Hughes Auditorium for the Renewed Class, the Luce Auditorium for the Beloved Class, Jameson Recital Hall for the Restored Class and the map side of the Radar Student Center for the Ignited Class.
