From Feb. 27 to March 1, the Beloved Class Sophomore Musical, The Sound of Music, will be happening in the Greathouse Theatre. There will be four shows; three at 7:30 each night and one at 2:00 on the 29th.
The story of The Sound of Music revolves around the main character Maria, who goes to take care of seven children as a governess and teaches them how to sing. The show’s cast and crew are entirely made up of the members of the sophomore class. Most of these students do not have any theater experience at all. SOMU is a time for students to do something outside of their comfort zone and be involved in this classic Asbury tradition.
The director, Jazmyn Lorentzen, is extremely excited for the audience to experience the show.
Lorentzen states, “I cannot imagine what my semester would be without the sophomore musical. A lot less eventful that’s for sure and a lot less stressful. And the people in the show, there are so many people I would have never spoken to if I hadn’t been directing or if I hadn’t been interested.” The musical is a bonding experience and brings people from all different majors together.
Ally Pickerill is the Beloved class president and Louisa in the production. She had not participated in a musical before this year. Pickerill says, “I’ve really liked SOMU this year. I’ve gotten to meet a lot of new friends and a lot of people I didn’t expect to be friends with. Now I’ve met some of my closest friends through SOMU and I’ve learned so much about myself and the people in my class.” The experience is remarkably special and genuine to all who get the chance to partake.
Everyone on Asbury’s campus is encouraged to see the show. All of the shows are sold out, but students are encouraged to come to the invited dress for free on Wednesday, the 26th or sign up to be an usher for one of the show dates. If you want more information, contact audrey.harris@asbury.edu.
