The annual Asbury University SEARCH Symposium and competition is a time to celebrate ideas in art and research through conversations that further the liberal arts. “In addition to showcasing student work, we welcome renowned guest speakers to share their knowledge and discoveries in various topics related to research, creativity and scientific innovation,” according to the SEARCH Symposium website. This year’s SEARCH Symposium will take place April 7-8.
The SEARCH Symposium will begin with a chapel led by guest speaker Dr. Phil Tallon on April 7 at 10 a.m. He will also be speaking later that day in Kinlaw Library Board Room at 2 p.m. His talk will be entitled “How Horror Movies Can Save Your Soul.” Dr. Tallon is an associate professor of theology at Houston Christian University, where he also serves as dean of the School of Christian Thought. As an author, Dr. Tallon “often writes about the problem of evil, the argument from beauty, theology, and film, and the work of C. S. Lewis,” according to his bio. Additionally, Tallon will give the keynote lecture in Jameson Recital Hall on April 8 at 7 p.m.
The Symposium is an opportunity for students from many different majors to explore the work of their friends and colleagues across various fields of study. Additionally, this gives students a unique opportunity to gain experience researching, writing and presenting academic papers. Students who have submitted SEARCH papers compete for cash prizes awarded to the top papers. The first prize winner will receive one thousand dollars while two runner-ups will receive awards of five hundred dollars.
Following the keynote speaker, the student showcase will take place in the Walt and Rowena Shaw Collaborative Learning Center Luce auditorium on April 8 from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
