As a part of the Contemporary Art Seminar class, taught by Graphic Design professor Josh Smith, students will have the opportunity to participate in a three-day trip to Chicago, April 3 – 4.
During their time in Chicago, students will explore the Chicago Art Institute as well as the Museum of Modern Art allowing them to see current shows from modern artists. Additionally, students will be staying in the 21C Hotel of Chicago which doubles as an art gallery itself.
Leading up to the trip to Chicago, class members build their understanding of different time periods and eras of art by looking at different artistic movements as well as individual artists. Learning about different artistic movements as well as the ways of thinking about art have changed throughout history gives students the groundwork to discover what influences contemporary art today.
Students will be able to immerse themselves in contemporary art both through the museums and galleries they will visit, as well as through engaging with the artistic culture of the city around them. Chicago boasts about eight art museums and galleries, making it an ideal place for an art-focused class trip.
