UK student found dead: alcohol toxicity and hazing suspected

An investigation regarding the death of student and fraternity member Thomas “Lofton” Hazelwood continues at the University of Kentucky.

Hazelwood, 18, was a freshman majoring in agricultural economics, and was a member of the fraternity. Hazelwood was found dead at FarmHouse Fraternity at 6:22 pm, Oct. 18.

According to Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn, alcohol toxicity was likely the cause of death, though this is still under investigation. The initial report has raised questions among the UK community about whether fraternity hazing had a hand in Hazelwood’s death, though FarmHouse is not facing any disciplinary action as of Oct. 21.

“Foul play is not suspected, but police are investigating the circumstances of his death,” UK spokesperson Jay Blanton told the Lexington Herald. Subsequently, the manner of death has been recorded as an accident. “I’m not going to comment further at this time while the investigation is underway,” Blanton said.

A community message was sent out on Oct. 19 from UK President Eli Capilouto and Vice President for Student Success Kirsten Turner, addressing Hazelwood’s death.

“First, two investigations have been launched by the university,” the message reads. “UK Police already has begun its investigation and is in the process of interviewing people. UK’s Office of Student Conduct also has begun a review. If you know something or have information about what happened, please call UK Police at (859) 323-8477 (TIPS).”

Once these investigations conclude, the findings will be made public and subject to protection of privacy for those involved.

Hazelwood’s mother, Tracy Hazelwood, told the Lexington Herald-Leader that the family has yet to be told anything concrete regarding the circumstances of her son’s death, aside from suspicions of alcohol abuse.

“He was an old soul,” Tracy Hazelwood said of her son. “Such a good boy. Loved his friends and family.”
