Jan. 28 saw the conclusion of Asbury’s “Holiness Emphasis” week for 2022: an annual, week-long chapel series supplemented by evening worship services, all in service of driving home the importance of holy thoughts and actions.
Holiness Emphasis typically features a guest speaker for chapel and worship services; for 2022, services were led by Rev. Dr. Carolyn Moore, founder and senior pastor of Mosaic United Methodist Church in Evans, Georgia, and Asbury Theological Seminary alumna. Her services were connected by the running theme of prayer practice – answering when to pray, how to pray, and why we pray.
“Whatever is happening in Heaven, that’s what we ought to be praying for on Earth,” Moore spoke during the Jan. 26 service. “We ought to be praying against war, against racism, against unforgiveness on Earth. And we don’t just pray against; we pray for. Is there true community, love, healing in Heaven? Pray for it friends.”
“Rev. Moore speaks with both humor and a great deal of passion,” Asbury Campus Chaplain Greg Haseloff told the Collegian. “Many students asked if she could keep coming back – or even ‘speak in chapel every day.’ I was really grateful for the focus on prayer, and how students gained a rich understanding of what we’ve always had words for in the Lord’s Prayer.”Furthermore, Haseloff praised student engagement with the event. “In the evening worship services I appreciated how students ‘practiced’ what they were taught. Students courageously came to the altar, listened to the Holy Spirit, and engaged these new forms and expressions of prayer. We finished the week more connected to heaven in how we pray.”
