We’re in the midst of October and yet for most of us, our minds are already focused on Halloween.
More specifically, what character should we portray on the spooky day itself. Should we go as a ghoul, vampire, superhero from Marvel/ DC, Freddy Krueger, Jason and the like? How about a zombified rendition of pop culture icons like Michael Jackson, James Bond etc.? It’s quite a tall order, because there are endless possibilities just like a “Choose Your Own Adventure” book. Sometimes all it needs is a spark and run with it, like what legendary basketball coach Pat Riley once said, “Look for your choices, pick the best one, then go with it.”
With that being said, here are some costume ideas to get your think tank fired up.
1. Vecna – Difficulty Level: Advanced
For those who have the resources or just want to take on a challenge, Vecna from “Stranger Things” might be for you. Hailed by some as the villain of the year, you’re going to get everyone running up that hill in no time when they see you in this.
Easier said than done, due to Vecna’s appearance being all melty and stringy. The turnaround for this is going to take you days to complete, not to mention the SFX skills you’ll need to conjure up. Quick tip, papier mache, 3D printing and found items work great rather than picking one material to build on.
2. Ted Lasso – Difficulty Level: Easy
Looking to inject some humor to the party? Then look no further than our favorite soccer coach Ted Lasso. Sure, there’ll be odd looks given once you barge in, but that’s Ted Lasso in a nutshell. He’s the king of oddities and wears that crown with flare and gusto.
To achieve his look, one can get a white polo (preferably long), and a navy-blue sweater. As for the pants, all you need are khakis and to tie it all up, match it with white sneakers. Don’t forget the piece de resistance, his signature mustache which can be recreated using paper and markers or buying one in store.
3. Ochako Urakara – Difficulty: Intermediate
Are you an anime fan but don’t know where to start? Then this might be for you! How about some Ochako Urakara from the show “My Hero Academia”? A lively and warm gal, she’s the epitome of the typical “good girl”. But don’t get that twisted because she’s a toughie when push comes to shove, especially to those who need her help.
For those wondering, the difficulty level for this is intermediate because she has two costumes which means you’ve got to pick. For starters, she has the schoolgirl attire which consists of: A gray blazer with blue trimmings that matches her skirt, a white polo and red tie. To add to that, it is then finished off with black leggings and brown shoes.
As for her alternate attire, it starts with a black/ dark blue bodysuit. This is then topped with light pink armor for her shoulders, middle of the chest and waist area. Of course, some knee-high boots of the same color, which are also armored. Quick tip, foam is your best friend when it comes to armoring up.
4. Bo Peep – Difficulty: Easy – Intermediate
Regarding great characters, Disney-Pixar has a treasure trove of them that we can bring to life. One of them that’s very deserving is Bo Peep from the “Toy Story” franchise. What started out as a simple girl from the countryside, Bo Peep has grown into a formidable character. While still sweet, she’s got that undeniable feistiness that just screams “girl power”.
What we’re going for here is the “Toy Story 4” look, so what you’ll need are the following: a baby blue overall with white laces and scalloping patterns in the chest area (preferably below knee in length), pink ribbon for the waist and hair, a purple arm band and cape. The shepherd’s staff is a must and lastly a hot pink transparent button to hold the cape together.
