Wilmore mayor Harold Rainwater won re-election Nov. 8 after earning over 80 percent of the vote. Rainwater was first elected mayor in 1976 and is currently the fifth longest-serving mayor in the US.
“I’m a 5th generation Wilmore resident, raised in Wilmore schools, Jessamine Co. High, Asbury College and EKU grad. I have been in public service my entire life as a Wilmore fireman, summer recreation director, city council and mayor. I love Wilmore, its deep history and safe community standards. We are one of the safest cities in Wilmore due to our police, fire, and public services. I was selected as Kentucky’s first-ever “City Official of the Year” in 2009. I was selected as central and eastern Ky.’s Best Mayor in 2022. I will continue to work to earn the public’s trust,” Rainwater told The Jessamine Journal.
For a town that only has two traffic lights and one grocery store, this year’s election stirred up much conversation over the fall season. Six spots for city council were available and no more than nearly 1,000 votes were cast for each opponent. Local barber and city council candidate, Wade Mitchell, fell short by a mere two votes. David Riel, Andy Bathje, Leonard Fitch, Jim Brumfield, Kim Deyer and newcomer Wesley Metcalfe each received at least nine percent of the vote and will serve on Wilmore’s city council.
