In a thrilling start to their season, the Asbury University men’s and women’s tennis teams showcased their prowess on the courts of Rome, Georgia., facing off against Berry College. While the men’s team faced a tough challenge, the women’s team rallied after doubles, securing an impressive victory.
Despite a setback in doubles, the Asbury women’s tennis team displayed resilience and determination, sweeping Berry College in singles matches. Led by standout performances from Ariadna Zegarra, Martina Paillet, Megan Moore, Fernanda Heredia, Kourtney Kawata, and Malory Watkins, the team secured a commanding 6-3 victory over the Vikings.
While the men’s team faced a challenging start against Berry College, there were glimpses of potential in their performance. The duo of freshmen Ben Moore and Andres Caceres clinched a notable victory in the #2 doubles matches, demonstrating promise for the season ahead. Despite valiant efforts in singles, including Ignacio Murillo’s impressive three-set battle, the team fell short, ultimately losing 8-1 to Berry College.
The women’s team saw stellar performances across the board in singles matches, with notable victories including Ariadna Zegarra’s confident win over Saris Mejia and Martina Paillet’s hard- fought triumph against Olivia Walton. On the men’s side, Ben Moore and Andres Caceres showcased their talent with a convincing win in doubles, while Ignacio Murillo displayed grit and determination in his singles match.
With the season opener behind them, both the men’s and women’s tennis teams are gearing up for their next matches. The men’s team will face Centre College on March 6th, looking to bounce back from their opening loss and showcase their true potential on the court.
