The Asbury Theatre department is looking to kick off an exciting new collection of events this coming semester.
First up on the ballot is “For the College Journey: a Cabaret,” a performance compiled and performed by Theatre students within the department, alongside Production Design and Audio emphasis majors. The performance will be taking place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28, at 7:30 p.m., as well as a matinee performance on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m.
The department’s first full play this school year will be William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” headed by surprising new guest director, Harvey Johnson. As well as guest directing “The Tempest,” Harvey Johnson will be taking on a teaching position as a visiting professor for the Fundamentals of Directing class within the Theatre Department. Showtimes for “The Tempest” are Nov. 7-16 (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday beginning at 7:30 p.m.), including a matinee performance on Nov. 9 starting at 2 p.m.
In exciting future news, the Short Play Festival will be returning this upcoming spring semester in February. It is a series of short plays written by Asbury students from across all departments. Students who are interested in submitting scripts for consideration should contact Theatre Department Director Kris Dietrich (Kristopher.Dietrich@asbury.edu). The deadline for script submissions is Oct. 21.
Finally, interest meetings for both of the upcoming Summer 2025 London trips are also coming up soon as well. Students interested in fulfilling their CCE/CCEX credit through the Theatre Department are encouraged to attend. There are two trips: one of which is a performance -based experience (headed by Dr. Jim Shores and Carol Anderson), and the other is a Production Design Experience to Pinewood Studios, headed by Kris Dietrich.
It is looking like an exciting semester for the Theatre Department, full of performance opportunities, student-led events and fulfilling experiences for all involved.
