With the fall semester, and the year entirely, coming to a close, now is the perfect time to check in on the whole of Asbury Athletics: a sort of progress report of each active team’s season up to this point.
Men’s Basketball
Three games in, the men’s basketball unit is looking for an opportunity to bounce back. They currently sit at 0-3, following three losses. It’s a simple matter of finding their footing in a new conference, it seems, as two of their losses have been within 10 points (and the other just outside that number.) The Eagles have a long season ahead and plenty of chances to turn things around, including three straight home games before they have to hit the road again.
Women’s Basketball
The women’s team has started the season with a 2-1 record, winning both home bouts thus far and losing the one game they’ve fought on the road. Much like the men’s program, all three games have been competitive for the entirety of the 40 minutes they were played. With two straight away games ahead, the team will look to find ways to win down the stretch, as well as in front of inevitably jeering opposing crowds.
Women’s Cross Country
Asbury’s women’s cross country started the year off hot with two third place finishes, followed up by a scorching first. Despite a 13th place finish in their fourth meet of the year, they quickly rebounded and finished first again in meet five, and then placed first once again in the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) championship. Even considering a 4/11 finish in the NCCAA National Championship, the women’s squad has pieced together a stacked resume this season.
Men’s Cross Country
The men’s unit, despite not boasting a first place finish, has strung together multiple fourth, third and even second place finishes, respectively. Their lowest performance of the season (outside of the final meet) saw them finish ninth, and even then, they managed to stay within the top ten. The team finished out a solid season with a 29th place finish at the NCAA Division 3 Great Lakes Regional out of 42 total schools.
Men’s Soccer
Thus far, men’s soccer holds a 10-5-3 record on the year. Seven of their wins have come on home turf, whilst despite winning only three on the road, they still maintain a .500 record in that aspect of the game. In conference play specifically, the Eagles have doubled their two losses with four wins; finding ways to win those in-house games is crucial come tournament time, and this squad has found consistent ways to do so. They’ll make an effort to keep stacking wins in the upcoming NCCAA Mideast Region Tournament.
Women’s Soccer
The women’s soccer team also holds a positive record at 8-6-5, managing a 4-2-2 slate in conference play. Though slightly less clean, the women have also managed an overall positive season, only struggling to find consistency. They have four wins and three losses both on the road and at home, finding ways to fight adversity on foreign turf just as well as they’re able to defend their own. The Lady Eagles also have only the Mideast Region Tournament ahead, where they’ll work to put a powerful bow on yet another season above .500.
Women’s Swimming
Early in a season that will carry on throughout next year, the women’s swimming team currently holds a 2-2 record. All four games have been played away from home to this point, so the team will look forward to having the chance to compete on their own shores next year. Until then, they’ll continue to travel and try to improve on their current even slate.
Men’s Swimming
The men’s swimming team sits one win below the women’s at 1-3, having faced the same long road trip. They’ll have a chance to turn things around before things circle back to home base following the upcoming academic break.
Golf
In three scored matches this year, the golf team finished second, first, and ninth. Regardless of the outlier, notching a gold and silver finish in two of the three events gleans a positive outlook for the team. Going forward, they’ll hold onto those high marks, and even work to find ways to improve on them next year.
