As the fall semester draws to a close, the Asbury Music and English Departments will be hosting their annual Songs of the Season Christmas Concert in Hughes Auditorium on Friday Dec 6 at 7:30 p.m.
All students, friends, family, and the community are invited to attend this festive event. “This is one of the biggest concerts of the year,” said concertmaster Isabel Firster, “with not only students attending, but many people coming in from the community as well.”
This concert consists of classic Advent hymns and carols presented by the Asbury Chorale, directed by professor Isaac Brooks and the Asbury Orchestra, directed by Dr. Nathan Miller. Sophomore Donovan Chung will be singing “Holy Night” and senior Grace Chang will be performing an aria from “Handel’s Messiah”.
“Songs of the Season is a concert that combines the talents of two major ensembles from the Asbury music department: the chorale and the orchestra,” said Firster, “it is also an interdepartmental production between the music department and the English department. Not only are ensembles from the music department performing, but English professors are doing readings throughout the concert.”
This concert is a time for family and friends to gather together for a restful and entertaining evening. Songs of the Season allows for space in the midst of the busyness to focus on the meaning and expectation of the Advent season as well as enjoy good music and literature.
The Orchestra will be performing songs such as “What Wondrous Love”, “What Sweeter Music”, “For Unto Us a Child is Born”, selections from “Messiah” by Handel, “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus”, “Once in Royal David’s City” and “Rejoice Greatly”.
“It’s hard to pick a favorite part. The whole thing is so beautiful,” said Chorale member Grace Price, “from the readings to the music to the decorations. I always love putting everything together with my friends to bless campus with a worshipful concert.”
