Lenten Music Chapel

As we approach Resurrection Sunday, Asbury University will be hosting a special Lenten Music Chapel. According to Caleb Simmons, Coordinator of Worship Arts, the purpose of the Lenten Music Chapel “is to reflect on the Lenten season: contemplating how Jesus suffered for His people and gave His life a ransom. It’s good for Christians to have a season to reflect on Christ’s sufferings so that we can grasp the cost of His sacrifice and be thankful for the atonement that He brings.”

The Lenten Music Chapel has been known to be an especially impactful chapel for the Asbury community. This chapel provides students with a space to contemplate the Lord’s sacrifice in a really unique way through music. Simmons commented “Concert band played a piece 2 years ago that portrayed the crucifixion so well that it almost brought me to tears. The way the music gave us a glimpse of the emotional torment that Jesus went through was so impactful. I love how God uses music to intercede for my lack of understanding!”

Simmons hopes that this year’s Lenten Chapel will give students “a glimpse of God’s love toward them.”

As we approach Resurrection Sunday, Simmons also hopes that students and faculty will continue their Lenten reflections outside of chapel, stating “I would recommend that students find a devotional on post-Lenten life and how we remember God’s grace towards His people. I know that for me when I remember how the King of the universe gave Himself up for me, it’s much easier to lay things down and to keep my pride in check. So also remembering to always be humble since we are held by the One that holds it all.”

The Lenten Music Chapel will take place on Wednesday April 16 at 10 a.m. and is open to all students, faculty, and staff. Attendees can expect a combination of instrumental and vocal pieces, Scripture readings, and moments of silence for personal reflection.

In the stillness of Lent and the promise of Resurrection Sunday, this chapel offers an opportunity to pause, reflect, and respond with gratitude for the love that was poured out on the cross.
