We love Wilmore

By Hannah Stafford, Contributing Writer

Autumn is often known as a time of giving thanks and showing appreciation for what we have. Asbury students have so many things to be thankful for and one is the blessing of a wonderfully supportive community in the city of Wilmore. This weekend, students will have the opportunity to show their appreciation through a special one-day event, ‘We Love Wilmore.’

Organized by the Asbury Outreach Coalition and formerly known as Fall Haul, We Love Wilmore is an opportunity for students to join together for a few hours tomorrow to help residents of Wilmore. Kaylyn Moran, Asbury’s coordinator for community service and social justice says that the school will be partnering with Jessamine County Habitat for Humanity — a program which as just recently been reestablished in the community.

“We’re just going to go around the community to different homes raking leaves and doing any other small outdoor projects that need done,” said Moran. “We’re going to visit some retired faculty and staff and other folks who have need of yard repair. It’s a really good way for us to help them out.”

It’s not too late for students who haven’t pre-registered to get involved. You can still sign up tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 7) in the Stuce from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. or email Kaylyn to register at kaylyn. moran@asbury.edu. Moran said that she plans for everyone to leave campus at 11:00 a.m. and work until 2:00 p.m..

While this is the first year of “We Love Wilmore”, the Asbury Outreach Coalition hopes to see this continue into the future and beyond just one day in the fall.

“I would love for this to be something that we can build on,” said Moran, “Habitat for Humanity is in the process of reestablishing itself so I would love to see our partnership with them grow. They are very concerned with providing affordable housing for folks and so oftentimes they come in and build a house for a family. If they were to do something like that over the next year, I think it would be great for Asbury to partner with them through that.”
