Coach Spotlight: Joe Barr

By Matthew Barnes, Sports Editor

The Asbury men’s and women’s golf teams have been led by Joe Barr for the past five seasons and have experienced some historic moments under his leadership. Last season, Barr guided the men’s squad to its first ever NAIA Championship appearance, where the team improved its score in each of its three rounds. The women’s team finished second in the conference championship last season as well.

Barr graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2013 with a decorated playing career. He played in 20 rounds of golf during his senior season and was an American Junior Golf Association All-American. He now is the head pro at Moss Hill Golf Club in Versailles, Kentucky.

“I’ve been playing golf my whole life,” said Barr. “Originally, I had a dream of playing professional golf. I was playing in college when I realized how much I would like to coach.”

Both golf teams are hosting a tournament March 25-26 at Connemara Golf Course in Nicholasville, Kentucky. In mid-April, they will be teeing it up for the River States Conference Championship in Florence, Indiana. The conference held a preview earlier this season where the men placed fourth out of 11 teams and the women came in second out of nine schools.

“I am very excited for both of these teams,” said Barr. “If both teams can be mentally stronger coming down the stretch of a tournament, then we will do very well.”
