Local spice: Fall drinks return to the menu

It’s October and the signs of fall are finally here. After a long, blazing summer the temperatures are dropping and the leaves are starting to change to shades of red and yellow. Signs of fall are everywhere around us — even in our cups.

As the temperatures are getting colder, our drinks are getting warmer, and the flavors are changing.

“Certain flavors make me think of fall,” said junior Hannah Becht, who considers herself a coffee connoisseur. “I love all fall drinks. They put me in a better mood, and they taste like fall and make me feel cozy.”

The coffee shops of Wilmore have released their specialty menus for the fall season to help bring warmth to the cold fall days. The HICCUP, Drinklings and Solomon’s Porch are filling cups with fall flavors. No matter which shop you visit, you’re guaranteed to find a drink that satisfies your fall cravings.

The HICCUP

The HICCUP, every Asbury student’s most-visited coffee shop, is offering new drinks in honor of the autumnal season: the s’mores mocha, apple cider, the prison mike affogato and the pumpkin spice chai.

Apple cider is a traditional fall favorite and the pumpkin spice chai puts a fall spin on the popular chai. The new s’mores mocha tastes like the snack made over a campfire — it is a mocha with marshmallow syrup and graham cracker topping added to the recipe.

A unique new treat, the “prison mike affogato,” combines the mike and an affogato. It is chocolate ice cream with espresso, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce and sea salt.

“Kylie [Kozar] came up with the drink,” said HICCUP barista and Asbury junior Josh Dale. “I came up with the name prison mike because of that episode of the Office where Michael tries to talk about prison and calls himself prison Mike.”

Drinklings

Drinklings incorporates pumpkin, a signature fall flavor, into two of its specials, and the other brings maple into the mix.

They are serving the classic pumpkin spice latte along with a maple macchiato and pumpkin spice chai. Customers can try these drinks cold or iced. Drinklings barista and Asbury senior Luke Philips says that his favorite is the maple macchiato.

Solomon’s Porch

Solomon’s Porch has created an extensive fall menu. With seven seasonal drinks, you’re guaranteed to get your fall flavor fix. Their recipes include a pumpkin pie latte, “fall-in-a-cup,” a spiced matcha latte, pumpkin butter latte, maple pecan latte, cider chai and apple cider. Some of the drinks are seasonal classics, like apple cider and pumpkin pie latte, but others are less traditional. “Fall-in-a-cup” is a maple and brown sugar latte. The spiced matcha latte, another lesser known drink, is a matcha latte with turmeric.
