Asbury celebrates Halloween 2019

Dress up, get scared, eat candy. 2019 featured the return of Asbury and Wilmore’s favorite Halloween events: Kresge Kandyland, the Salvation Army Student Fellowship Halloween party, the Stuce costume party, Treats on Main and the Phi Beta Alpha Halloween party.

Kresge Kandyland

Held on Friday, Oct. 25 from 6-8 p.m., the annual Kresge event welcomed students and families from the surrounding communities. Each hall in the dorm had a different theme and game or activity, and residents dressed up according to the theme. Activities ranged from cornhole in the basement, spooky ring toss, cookie decorating, coloring and more. One unique theme was on Third Mid, which hosted a game called “Help Grandma.” Some residents on the hall dressed up as old ladies and others as nurses for the theme of a nursing home.

The hall’s resident assistant, Rebekah Kerby, said the event was a huge success and her residents worked hard to make it happen. “One of my residents, Sarah Graham, came up with the idea of having our theme be something to do with grandmas, because why not?” Kerby said. “Through brainstorming with the hall, this idea evolved into ‘Helping Grandma through the pumpkin patch.’” Each “grandma” would start at one end of the room filled with pumpkins, and kids would stand at the other end telling her where to step to avoid the pumpkins.

Stuce party

The annual Halloween costume party in the Stuce took place the night of Oct. 31. It featured spooky treats, games and activities like pumpkin painting and a costume contest. Students arrived in a variety of costumes and a set of judges determined the winners of the individual and group costume contests. Afterward at 9 p.m., the Aldersgate apartments hosted a movie night showing the live action Scooby Doo movie. Students brought their own blankets and seating and enjoyed snacks on the lawn.

SASF Halloween Party

On Sunday, Oct. 27, the Salvation Army Student Fellowship center hosted its annual costume party. Students enjoyed Halloween-themed games, dinner and fellowship with others. Student Body President Maggie Richwine attended the party and said her favorite part was the pie-eating contest. “Rodney Jean represented the Trustees dorm and devoured the pie, despite his dissatisfaction,” Richwine said. “It was fun to see a bunch of students hang out and have a good time together in the midst of a busy semester.”

Treats on Main

Much like Kresge Kandyland, downtown Wilmore hosts its own Halloween festival every year. On Oct. 31 from 6:00-7:30 p.m,. Main Street was closed to traffic for people to gather in their Halloween costumes. Businesses and churches on the street had games and prizes and handed out candy. Treats on Main also featured a costume contest at 7:30.

Phi Beta Alpha party

Open to all of campus, Phi Beta Alpha hosted its costume party Oct. 29 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Reasoner 214. Students watched spooky-themed TED Talks and discussed them afterward while enjoying candy and other Halloween treats.
