The Asbury swim teams have officially wrapped up their regular season, but as conference meets and nationals loom ahead, their work is far from over.
Both the men’s and women’s teams competed in their last regular season meet of the year on Feb. 1 at Centre College. While Centre won the meet on both sides, the AU swim teams still had several notable achievements, with sophomore Alex Wu winning first place in the 100m butterfly and freshman Haden Hebenstreit taking first in the 1000m freestyle.
Overall, the women’s swim team will finish the season with 7-4 in head-to-head meets, and the men’s swim team will finish an impressive 9-2 record in head-to-head meets. With the addition of many new freshmen this year, the swim team was able to accomplish a lot both in and out of the pool.
“I cannot believe we just completed our final meet of the regular season,” said Head Coach Alex Keyser. “It seems like just yesterday we were in the Team Suite, having the first team meeting, and now we are turning all of our focus to the AAC Championships.”
The Asbury swim team will compete in the AAC Championships from Feb. 13-15 in Kingsport, Tennessee. They look to dominate the conference in several areas, with both female and male athletes in pursuit of conference titles.
But the AAC Conference meet is not the end of the 2019-2020 season for a large portion of the Asbury swim team. Many of the athletes on the AU team will be competing in the NAIA National Meet that will take place after the conference meet.
“Our conference team is fully tapering for the AAC Championships,” Keyser said, “and the national team that already has qualified for NAIA Nationals will be training through our conference meet. I’m very confident that with a solid taper, we are going to put up some impressive times and have more swimmers qualify for NAIA Nationals.”
