This year’s Emmy Awards was definitely one of the most interesting awards shows of the season. Jimmy Kimmel caught an envelope on fire, all of the nominees essentially Zoom-ed in while a hazmat suit-clad intern waited outside of their doors holding the Emmy that could be theirs. If nothing else, this Emmys was an odd one.
One thing that caught everyone’s eyes and ears, however, in a different and more somber light was “Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson’s speech; even Kimmel was left shocked by the force of his words. He proclaimed that this Emmys was important because “black stories […] and black lives matter.” These words have been broadcast across the country for months but hearing them afresh left us no less impacted.
Tyler Perry gave a speech no less impactful, sharing his story after receiving the prestigious Governors Award. He explained the impact of his past on how he treats people, and we got to see exactly how he helped people through his film company that he built from the ground up. I personally am not a big fan of his movies, but I respect him a lot more after this speech.
Along with his powerful statement, a few of the nominees streamed in wearing t-shirts demanding justice for the unjust killing of Breonna Taylor, including “Watchmen” star Regina King and “Mrs. America” supporting actress Uzo Aduba. This Emmys was a platform for oppressed voices to be lifted up and for the downtrodden to be comforted.
It was also a platform for the essential workers who may have been overlooked to be able to have a brief moment in the spotlight. Truck drivers, doctors, farmers and more were able to present awards to the nominees through pre-recorded clips played when prompted. It was a small gesture, but heart-warming nonetheless.
The show did not go without its hiccups, however. Many of Kimmel’s jokes landed pretty flat without an audience to pity laugh. The video conference style also presented some difficulties such as poor audio and video quality along with some people not being able to stream in for the show.
These problems did not keep this from being a great Emmys. Everything from “Euphoria” star Zendaya’s win as best actress in a drama series (being the youngest winner for that category ever) to the heartfelt statements of many nominees and presenters will keep this Emmys a unique one in the history books.
