Eagle feature: Men’s and women’s tennis

The Asbury men’s and women’s tennis programs are having a stellar season — the men’s team with a win streak of six games giving them a 7-1 record and the women’s team with a five-game win streak and a 6-1 record.

With a current winning streak for both programs, the Eagles are finding ways to stay successful during a pandemic season. Neither sophomore Allie Sutton nor junior Choopat “Kaikai” Suvimolstean deny the impact that COVID has had on the season.

“COVID has controlled everything this season,” Sutton said. “Several other teams had to cancel on us because of issues they were having and now we have just recently experienced our first positive case on the tennis team which caused all of us to go into quarantine for a week.”

“COVID actually affected our season a lot. We have less matches and tournaments to play this season because of it,” said Suvimolstean.

Staying positive and finding ways to have fun have helped cultivate the spirit and motivation of both teams.

“I am very happy with the success of both the men’s and women’s teams so far,” said Sutton.

“It is still pretty fun and most importantly, we still chase the conference championship as normal,” said Suvimolstean.

With the conference tournament coming up, both teams understand what needs to happen in order to finish the season strong.

“Hopefully after all of our women’s players return from quarantine, we can work on gaining more consistency [continuously improving and playing well] during matches,” said Sutton.

“To improve on [what we’ve done] would be the individual’s self-responsibility. I think we can be better if our fitness is close to hundred percent every time we perform,” said Suvimolstean.
